Delhi logs 4099 new Covid cases, positivity rate jumps to 6.46 pc

[ad_1] The national capital on Monday reported 4,099 new Covid cases, 28 per cent more than on Sunday, and one death due to the disease as the positivity rate rose to 6.46 per cent, according to the data shared by the health department. If the positivity rate is over five per cent for two consecutive days, it would trigger a ‘red alert’ under the Delhi Disaster Management Authority-approved Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) leading to a ‘total curfew’ and halting of most economic activities. Delhi reported 3,194 Covid cases with a positivity rate of 4.59 per cent on Sunday and 2,716 cases with a positivity rate of 3.6 per cent on Saturday. On Friday and Thursday, 1,796 and 1,313 cases were recorded with a positivity rate of 1.73 per cent and 2.44 per cent, respectively, according to official figures. The daily case tally on Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday were 923, 496 and 331, respectively. [ad_2] Source link

Rupee Outlook 2022: INR depreciation beyond 78 mark vs USD unlikely due to India’s forex kitty

[ad_1] In the light of abundant foreign exchange reserves and strong performance of rupee vis-a-vis its global peers, rupee’s depreciation beyond Rs 78 per US dollar in 2022 is unlikely. “The rupee is likely to face resistance near 78 level and strengthen back to 72 levels in coming months as India seems to be in a better position to withstand any major shock from monetary tightening,” according to a report from ICICI Direct Research. In its outlook for the Indian currency market, ICICI Direct said that unlike 2013 when the rupee had depreciated drastically after the U.S. Fed announced monetary tightening, India currently holds the fourth largest forex reserve and surplus BOP. In this circumstance, the rupee has better footing to handle volatility induced by the US Fed tapering.  India’s forex reserves are equal to about 12 months of import cover, the report pointed. “Further, with stability in oil prices and import cover of more than 10 months, the rupee should have enough cushion to withstand external shocks,” the report added. In the latest update from the RBI, India’s total foreign exchange reserves are at $635.08 billion as on December 24, 2021. India’s current account balance recorded a deficit of $9.6 billion in second quarter as against a surplus of $6.6 billion in first quarter, the central bank said that the deficit was mainly due to widening of trade deficit in the preceding quarter and an increase in net outgo of investment income. Brokerage firm ICICI Direct Research said that the balance of payment (BOP) remained in surplus on strong FDI inflows and narrower current account balance. In FY23, even if the trade deficit widens as the economy reopens, strong inflows will keep the current account deficit in check, the report said. “As the world economy goes back to normalcy exports should start rising, preventing a huge trade deficit even if imports recover further as economic activities pick up,” according to the report. The brokerage firm said in 2021 rupee depreciated 1.8% against dollar, outperforming its global peers such as Japan’s yen, South Korean won, South African rand and EU’s euro which depreciated by 11.5%, 9.7%, 8.5% and 7.9% respectively.  A rise in risk appetite in the global markets helped the rupee perform better than its peers, the report said. Inflation which remained under RBI’s comfort zone, helped the central bank to maintain lower borrowing costs to support the economic recovery, and contributed to rupee’s performance, the report added. The rupee started the year 2022 on a muted note at 74.43 against the greenback in opening trade on Monday, according to PTI. Forex traders said growing concerns over the omicron variant of coronavirus and its impact on economic recovery as well as firm crude oil prices weighed on the local unit. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, increased by 0.19 per cent to 96.85. [ad_2] Source link

Delhi BJP stages ‘chakka jam’ against AAP govt’s new excise policy, causes heavy traffic snarls

[ad_1] The workers of Delhi BJP on Monday staged ‘chakka jam’ (road blockade) at several places across the national capital to protest against the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government’s new excise policy. Visuals tweeted by ANI showed massive traffic jams near Akshardham Temple due to the protest led by Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta, causing inconvenience to commuters. “The Delhi government is opening liquor shops illegally across the city under its new excise policy. Shops are being opened near residential and religious places. Our protest will continue until the new liquor policy is rolled back,” Gupta told reporters. Hitting back, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the BJP was “in pain” because the government’s new excise schemes had stopped trade of illicit liquor in the national capital. “BJP always had a link with alcohol mafia. Illegal alcohol was sold at many places by BJP. With CM Kejriwal’s schemes stopped Rs 3500 crores of money from being stolen, so BJP is in pain,” he said. A commuter, who was stuck on National Highway 24, said, “There is a heavy traffic jam on NH-24. Most of the roads are blocked by the protesters and it is causing inconvenience to people like us who need to reach office on time.” BJP workers stage "chakka jam" protest against Delhi Govt's new excise policy; visuals from near Akshardham temple pic.twitter.com/9K5dajvDpS — ANI (@ANI) January 3, 2022 Asked about the commuters facing trouble due to the protest, Gupta claimed that it is a public movement and that people are ready to bear with it in order to get rid of the new excise policy of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. Other locations where the “chakka jam” protest is being conducted include the Car Bazar at Vikas Marg, Dayaram Chowk and Civil Lines. The protesters raised slogans against the city government and its new excise policy. They also made repeated announcements that all emergency vehicles should be given way and no harm should be caused to public property. On Saturday, Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta alleged that the city government is opening liquor shops “illegally” across the city under the new excise policy. Gupta said that three municipal corporations — which are ruled by his party — will not allow opening liquor shops under the new excise policy in non-conforming areas or if they are coming up in clear violation of master plan 2021. He also said that liquor shops located in close vicinity of a religious place or a school will not be allowed. [ad_2] Source link
