My best deal this past week was stumbling upon canned pumpkin for just $0.25/can!!! I bought enough to probably last all year — we’ll use it for pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, and maybe pumpkin waffles. All totaled, I spent $67 on groceries — and we’re stocked up on chicken and eggs for a few weeks + pumpkin for the year! I made Cheesy Hamburger Potato Soup one night — using some of the great deal on potatoes I got a few months ago! I made some homemade crackers to go along with the soup. We loved the soup! And the crackers were delicious, too! Even Baby D ate multiple spoonfuls of soup — which is a bug victory for him! Another night, we had potatoes, smoked sausage, and carrots in thee crockpot. I don’t use a recipe: I just chop and dump into the crockpot and then cook until done. It’s so delicious — and a filling and frugal meal! I made homemade rolls to go along with the crockpot dinner. I used this recipe — it was new to me and it was HUGE winner! The rolls were so easy and quick to make — and they turned out so beautifully and soft and delicious! One of my daily salads for lunch. Wednesday nights are always full — we have multiple activities for multiple people in multiple places, so I usually do a grab and go dinner. We did Breakfast for Dinner this past week — make your own waffles + scrambled eggs with cheese. The girls got these mini waffle makers for Christmas and we’ve been enjoying using them! [ad_1] Income Tax Budget 2022 Live Updates: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present Union Budget 2022-23 in Parliament today. Taxpayers are expecting the announcement of changes in Income Tax Slabs and Rates. Some experts believe that big bang tax relief may not be announced in Budget 2022. However, Economic Survey 2021-22 tabled in the Parliament on Monday (January 31, 2022) raises hope for bigger tax reliefs for all types of taxpayers, including salaried individuals, senior citizens, NRIs and pensioners. The Economic Survey has listed several relief measures for taxpayers the Government has taken since the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic (read details here). Now that the economy is looking set to grow fast, one can hope the Government will improve upon last year’s tax-related announcements. [ad_1] FHFA, Federal Housing Finance Agency Last March, then-Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Mark Calabria wanted to pay a Fannie Mae executive a $250,000 “bonus,” under the guise of a retention award. Fannie Mae went along with award, according to a FHFA Inspector General report, although the amount the enterprise originally proposed for the award was smaller. According to the report, the award was for retention in “name only.” Federal law bars bonuses to GSE executives while they are under conservatorship. As rationale for the award, the investigation said Calabria pointed to the disparity between the Fannie Mae executive’s pay and that of his counterpart at Freddie Mac. The former FHFA director also cited the executive’s “candor and willingness to carry out policy direction” from FHFA, which he said he “found to be uncommon among Enterprise executives.” A spokesperson for Fannie Mae referred questions on the report to FHFA. A spokesperson for FHFA declined to comment on the report. Calabria did not return a request to comment. Around March 2021, Calabria asked Fannie Mae CEO Hugh Frater to “do something extra” and come up with a “special bonus” for the executive, the inspector general report found. Initially, Frater resisted the direction, especially since Fannie Mae planned to give the executive additional duties and a concomitant increase in compensation. But FHFA insisted, and by May, Fannie Mae came up with a plan to give the executive $100,000 as a retention award. FHFA directed Fannie Mae to increase the award to $250,000, because Calabria found Fannie Mae’s proposal “inadequate in light of other compensation requests proposed by the enterprises,” the report said. In a letter to FHFA Acting Inspector General Phyllis Fong, responding to the findings, FHFA Acting Director Sandra Thompson said FHFA directed Fannie Mae to not disburse the payment. “It is of the utmost importance that [FHFA’s] decisions are made consistent with applicable laws and regulations and are documented in a manner that meets the requirements of the Federal Records Act and FHFA policy,” wrote Thompson, in a letter agreeing with the watchdog’s recommendations. The FHFA will also look into whether the payment would have been a violation of the STOCK Act, a 2012 law prohibiting bonuses for GSE senior executives while the enterprise is in conservatorship. FHFA does allow Fannie Mae to award retention bonuses. But former Fannie Mae officials, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, found the proposed award detailed in the IG report “nonsensical,” and said the bonus was not like any retention award they had observed. The proposed bonus for past performance was not like any retention award former Fannie Mae officials had received, they told HousingWire. One former official said that, in years past, retention awards were commonplace at Fannie Mae. The official had received a retention award conditioned on staying at the enterprise for two years. But that award was clearly geared toward retention, the official said. If the official instead decided to leave during the second year, they would have to return the cash. “So you were really handcuffed,” the person said. Although the watchdog report was heavily redacted to conceal the name and title of the executive, multiple Fannie Mae officials told HousingWire that the award was for Henry Cason, who most recently was Fannie Mae’s head of digital products. Cason did not respond to requests for comment. Cason spent 27 years at Fannie Mae, and played a key role in developing Fannie Mae’s Desktop Underwriter. He planned to leave at the end of the second quarter of 2021 to be the CEO of FinLocker, according to Business Insider, although he announced his departure earlier that year. His departure followed a string of other executive exits at Fannie Mae during the second half of 2020 and into 2021, including Fannie Mae’s head of single family, Andrew Bon Salle, and Fannie Mae’s chief customer officer, Desmond Smith. Limits on executive compensation at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have long posed a challenge for retaining talented executives. [ad_1] Yield on benchmark government securities eased more than 5 basis points on Monday after the announcement of completion of switch or conversion transaction by the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The sentiment of traders also improved after the Economic Survey 2021-22 said the fiscal deficit targets for FY22 would be met. The new 10-year benchmark 6.54%-2032 bond yield ended 8 basis points down at 6.6841%, compared to 6.7688%. The old benchmark 6.10%-2031 bond yield ended 6 basis points down at 6.6829%, against 6.7527% at the close of the previous trading session. “The market reacted to the Economic Survey and other events like the Budget scheduled for tomorrow, and the RBI monetary policy next week. This kind of volatility in these circumstances is not unusual and we expect the same to subside as the news flow around these major events starts happening,” said Ajay Manglunia, MD and head – institutional fixed income at JM Financial. On Monday, the government did conversion or switch operations with market participants as well as with the RBI to minimize the redemption and reduce pressure on market borrowings. The conversion transaction was done with the RBI on January 28 for an amount of Rs 1,19,701 crore. Market participants said switching with the RBI reduces duration pressure in near term. “The switch announcement is an obvious positive for the market as it directly impacts the government’s cash flows. Markets are also expecting some announcements in the Budget that will speed up the inclusion in global bond indices,” said Anand Nevatia, fund manager, Trust Mutual Fund. Market participants expect the government to keep the borrowing between Rs 12.50 lakh crore and Rs 13 lakh crore for the next fiscal in the Budget. However, bond yields are expected to rise in near term as interest rate cycles are turning. “We expect bond yields to continue to rise as the interest rate cycle is turning not only domestically, but also globally, and we do not expect any major support from the RBI in FY23,” said Puneet Pal, head – fixed income, PGIM India Mutual Fund.
