[ad_1] Shoppers Stop has launched its first standalone beauty store SS Beauty in Malad, Mumbai. By March, the retail chain, owned by K Raheja Corp, plans to launch two more stores, one each in Mumbai and Ludhiana, and 12 more in cities like Delhi and Kolkata in the next financial year. All of its 80 stores in the country have a dedicated beauty section. Besides, it also operates standalone stores of MAC Cosmetics, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Jo Malone, and Too Faced in the country. The beauty and personal care market in India was valued at around $15 billion in 2021, and is likely to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next five years, according to Euromonitor.  Growth mode Spread across 2,000 sq ft, the SS Beauty store in Malad has trained beauty advisors to assist and offer suggestions on make-up and beauty products. Focussed on the premium beauty space, the store houses over 200 beauty brands, including Kora, Caudalie, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, and Parfums de Marly. The company plans to launch a dedicated website and app for SS Beauty in the next few months. “Currently, the beauty segment contributes around 17% of our total sales. We are observing growth in this segment across all our channels; hence, we believe that SS Beauty stores will give us the opportunity to grow faster,” says Venu Nair, MD and CEO, Shoppers Stop. Shoppers Stop launched its private label in the beauty space, called Arcelia, last year, which comprises a bath and body care range, and fragrances and deodorants. The brand plans to add nail paints this month, followed by lipsticks and other make-up products. The company also launched two private label brands in the apparel segment — Insense and in.fuse. Insense is a women’s sleepwear and loungewear brand, while in.fuse is an online-only brand that caters to menswear, womenswear and kidswear. “Private labels currently contribute around 14% of our overall sales. We intend to grow this to 20-25% in the next two years. Apart from our stores and website, private label brands are also available on Amazon,” Nair says. Private labels give retailers better control over pricing and inventory. “They offer margins as high as 50%. They bridge the price gap between what the customer is willing to pay and what the big brands are charging,” says Sanjesh Thakur, partner, Deloitte India. Further, the retail chain aims to consolidate its offline presence by launching 12 stores by FY23. The online channel, Nair says, has grown in the past year, and “currently contributes 6% of total sales, compared to 1.5% in FY21”. Market potential Analysts say, one compelling reason to venture into this business is the associated higher margins compared to those in the apparel category. “The gross margin in this segment is around 30%; there is also a recurring demand observed in this category, which makes it an attractive segment to invest in,” explains Thakur. But players like Shoppers Stop may find it challenging to compete with the discounts offered by online marketplaces such as Amazon, and the mass, premium, and private label offerings of specialist retailers like Nykaa and Purplle. Direct-to-consumer brands like SUGAR Cosmetics and MyGlamm, too, have gained traction over time. “Reach would be another challenge as online players have better capability in terms of catering to customers in tier II and III cities, compared to offline players with limited stores,” says Neelesh Hundekari, partner, Kearney. To stand out, analysts say, retail chains could make use of AR in stores for trials, and personalisation. Crafting bespoke products through digital consultations based on skin textures and lifestyles, and offering beauty regimens instead of standalone products could draw customers. Safeguarding Retail Investors | Disclosure norms: New-age firms’ valuations to moderate

[ad_1] By Malini Bhupta The Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (Sebi) disclosure framework for new-age technology companies, looking to go public, will have a sobering effect on valuations, according to investment bankers. The market regulator’s consultation paper on Friday proposed disclosure of key performance indicators (KPIs) that these companies share with pre-IPO investors during fund-raising, which becomes the basis of valuations and even the issue price. Now, companies will have to disclose the KPIs and details on valuations three years prior to the IPO. The consultation paper comes on the back of a sharp correction in the stock prices of the recently listed new-age tech companies, which are still loss-making. Shares of companies like Zomato, One 97 Communications (Paytm), Nykaa and PB Fintech have corrected sharply since listings. The regulator is seeking to provide more data and transparency to investors looking to invest in these high risk-high-reward companies. Investment bankers say that in the short-term, some of these companies may have to go back and find ways to justify their valuations to investors, while those companies that already have sustainable business models will continue to tap public markets. However, those looking to tap markets now will have to work hard to justify valuations. Raja Lahiri, partner-transaction advisory at Grant Thornton, says: “In my view, this is a good move by the Sebi to bring a transparency around pricing and valuation basis for new-age companies. Valuations and pricing, in my view, are a subjective process and perhaps, the theme of ‘sustainability’ needs to be embedded in valuations. Companies and their stakeholders are sure to take this into account in future IPO pricing.” By enhancing disclosures, the regulator is working on the market’s maturity but it may not solve the problem of valuations necessarily, as these are subjective. The consultation paper hopes that these disclosures would enable investors to evaluate the opportunities better, but the investment thesis of venture capitalists is very different from retail. According to Yatin Singh, Head-Investment Banking at Emkay Global, “The move will create information parity is the hope, but it doesn’t work that way as the risk-return appetite of venture capitalists is very different from those coming to public markets. It is hard to compare a preferential instrument with a common equity instrument. Disclosing KPIs is fine, but when you disclose funding series, then the justification is very different from common equity constructs.” Last year, several new-age technology companies, without any financial track record, tapped the public markets at lofty valuations. Many of these companies are either near or below their issue price. Zomato is trading close to its issue price, while Paytm’s share price is down to `833 per share from its issue price of Rs 2,150 per share. Experts say that the regulator is keen to protect the capital of retail investors and prevent private equity and venture capitalists from exiting companies at the cost of retail investors. Karnataka sees 1,001 COVID cases, 18 deaths

[ad_1] COVID-19 cases in Karnataka declined from 1,137 cases on Saturday to 1,001 cases on Sunday while 18 deaths took place today. These took the total infected and fatalities till date to 39,36,586 and 39,795, said the State Health Department. A bulletin said 1,780 people were discharged. The total recoveries were 38,84,120 so far. Active cases stood at 12,634. Bengaluru urban district reported 485 infections and 12 deaths. Other districts too had fresh cases: 93 in Tumakuru, 51 in Belagavi, 48 in Mysuru, 46 in Ballari and 42 in Kodagu. There were deaths in six districts, including the two in Dharwad. There were zero fatalities in 25 districts. The test positivity rate for the day was 1.42 per cent and the case fatality rate was 1.79 per cent. As many as 70,290 tests were conducted and they included 53,503 RT-PCR tests. This took the total tests so far to 6.40 crore. There were 19,998 people who got inoculated and the number of those vaccinated so far was 9.96 crore, the department said. [ad_2] Source link

Why Your Prayers May Not Be Answered

Madhya Pradesh sees 950 COVID-19 cases, 2 deaths; positivity rate dips to 1.3 per cent

[ad_1] The COVID-19 tally in Madhya Pradesh reached 10,34,440 on Sunday after the detection of 950 new cases, while the deaths of two patients took the toll to 10,715, a health department official said. The positivity rate came down to 1.3 per cent from 1.4 per cent on Saturday, he added. The recovery count stood at 10,16,198 after 1,785 people were discharged during the day, leaving MP with 7,527 active cases, he said. Bhopal and Indore, the two worst coronavirus-hit cities of Madhya Pradesh, registered 214 and 76 cases, respectively, during the past 24 hours, he said. With 68,952 samples examined during the day, the number of tests in MP went up to 2,73,68,919, the official added. A government release said 11,30,31,862 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered so far in the state, including 12,924 on Sunday.
