What Is Caviar Delivery?

Caviar launched in 2013 as a premium food delivery app for higher-end restaurants. “We partner with the coolest/best spots in your city,” Caviar’s website says, “because that’s what we’re all about.”

Rival DoorDash purchased the company from Square in 2019 for a whopping $410 million. DoorDash still owns Caviar today.

Customers who use both DoorDash and Square need to use separate apps when ordering food. But drivers — known as Dashers — use the same DoorDash: Driver app to work for both services. There’s no separate Caviar app for workers.

Since Caviar caters to high-end restaurants, the orders tend to be more expensive. This usually leads to better tips.

The only catch is that Caviar deliveries aren’t available in most areas.

Caviar locations

Unlike DoorDash, which serves thousands of communities, Caviar is only active in a handful of metropolitan areas. But this is likely to change in the future.

Here’s a list of Caviar’s current locations:

  • Washington, D.C.
  • New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens)
  • Chicago
  • Dallas-Fort Worth
  • Greater Philadelphia
  • Boston
  • Los Angeles
  • Marin County
  • Portland
  • Sacramento
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco Bay area
  • Seattle
  • Southern New Jersey

Caviar Driver Requirements

Worried that your car isn’t up to snuff for Caviar? Don’t fret. Despite the fancy name, Caviar isn’t strict about the type of car you drive.

In fact, I would think twice about making food deliveries in a fancy car. After all, you don’t want your new Lexus to smell like bouillabaisse when it’s time to pick your friends up for a night out.

Here are the specific requirements to drive for Caviar:

  • Drivers must be at least 18 years old with at least two years of driving experience
  • They must have a valid driver’s license, insurance, and Social Security number
  • Drivers also need to consent to a background check
  • You must have a smartphone to download and use the mobile app
  • As for getting around, you can use any functioning car, scooter, or even a bicycle in select cities

Caviar Features for Drivers

Here are the features you’ll want to know about if you decide to drive for Caviar.

Advanced scheduling

Caviar is flexible about when you can work. You can use the app’s on-demand feature or schedule blocks of deliveries for a later date.

My advice is to consider working during the busiest hours — around lunch and dinner. You can also stay active during odd hours while doing other side hustles.

Drive anywhere

Unlike most rideshare services, Caviar doesn’t limit where you can drive. If you travel to another city and want to make deliveries while you’re there, nothing is holding you back.

For example, suppose you take a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle to chill with some friends for the week. In between your visits to Pike Place Market and the Museum of Pop Culture, you can hop in your car and make some money to cover your restaurant tab.

With that in mind, Caviar is an attractive option for U.S.-based, urban digital nomads who have a car, scooter, or bike.

Know your pay upfront

One of my favorite features about Caviar is the ability to see how much you can make in delivery fees before you agree to an order.

If the price is too low or you don’t feel like driving to a remote part of town, you don’t have to take the job.

How Does Caviar Pay Drivers?

Caviar pays drivers using DoorDash’s Dasher pay model.

Here’s a look at how Caviar calculates pay for drivers.

Base pay

Base pay factors include time, distance, and order desirability. Base pay ranges from $2 to $10 per delivery.

You can potentially make more money by traveling further or picking up an order that’s less desirable to other Dashers.

Promotions

You may be able to earn more through promotions like peak pay periods and driver challenges.

Peak pay periods occur at specific times of the day when delivery fees are higher. For example, you can usually make the most money during regular lunch and dinner hours.

I’ll explain more about challenges in just a bit.

Tips

With Caviar, you can earn 100% of customer tips in addition to base pay and promotions.

This is pretty standard. Most delivery services let drivers keep 100% of the tips they make.

Signing Up and Starting With Caviar

It’s super easy to sign up for Caviar. Here’s how to get started.

  1. Complete a Dasher profile
  2. Background check
  3. Add a bank account
  4. Complete your first ride
  5. Receive an activation kit

1. Complete a Dasher profile

First, sign up as a Dasher and build a profile. Enter your email address, phone number, and select your vehicle type.

2. Background check

Caviar and DoorDash have a partnership with Checkr, which is a third-party consumer reporting agency.

You’ll need to consent to a background check. Processing could take anywhere from five to seven days. During that time, you can reach out to Checkr and check the status of your report if you’re getting impatient.

3. Add a bank account

Next, it’s time to connect your bank account by linking your routing number and checking numbers.

DoorDash pays weekly through direct deposit. You can also sign up for the DasherDirect card, which accepts daily deposits and has no deposit fee. On top of this, you’ll get 2 percent cash-back on gas and access to a mobile banking app, too.

I like this option because the app charges you $1.99 to instantly cash out your earnings otherwise. Plus, you can cash out only once daily through the app without the DasherDirect card.

4. Complete your first ride

Once your background check clears, log in to your Dasher app. It’s time to take your talents on the road and earn some money.

5. Receive an activation kit

After you complete your first order, the app will ask for your mailing address. Enter the information so the company can send you a welcome kit. It can take anywhere from one to four days for the activation kit to arrive.

The welcome kit contains a Red Card, an insulated hot bag for food, and a welcome manual.

The Red Card is a credit card you can use to pay for orders at select merchants. The company preloads the Red Card with money, and you pay for the order at the time of pickup. For added convenience, the app lets you know when to pay with the Red Card.

Caviar Promotions for 2021

Here are the top promotions Caviar is currently running.

Driver referral bonus

Chances are you have a few friends that may want to drive for Caviar, too.

Good news: Caviar offers a driver referral bonus. Simply head over to the Dash tab and look for the “refer friends” option.

After that, have someone sign up to drive as a Dasher. You’ll earn cash rewards if the driver completes a certain number of deliveries. The payout varies across different areas, and you can refer up to fifteen drivers.

Challenges

You can also earn extra money by completing delivery challenges.

For example, the app might offer a $20 bonus if you complete a certain number of deliveries throughout the week.

This is a fun way to push yourself to make more money. Just make sure you don’t overdo it and burn yourself out.

Top Dasher

Top Dasher is a rewards program for GrubHub and Caviar drivers.

To qualify, you need to have a customer rating of 4.7, an acceptance rate of at least 70 percent, and a completion rate of at least 95 percent. Further, you must complete at least 100 deliveries over the month and at least 200 lifetime deliveries.

If you meet the Top Dasher requirements on the first day of the month, you’ll get access to the Dasher Rewards section of the app.

Right now, the Top Dasher program offers two rewards.

1. Dash Anytime

Dash Anytime gives you priority driving access, regardless of whether it’s busy.

2. Order priority

This enables you to receive priority for orders even during slower times. If there’s a non-Top Dasher in your area, you’ll get the first crack at the delivery.

Dasher Discounts

Caviar partners with several national brands and merchants for the Dasher Discounts program. As a driver for Caviar or DoorDash, you can access the following deals.

CarAdvise

CarAdvise offers up to $20 in credits for car maintenance.

Clerkie

Clerkie offers free unlimited debt negotiations and tools for improving your credit.

Everlance

Everlance is giving away three free months of Everlance Premium for assistance with taxes, mileage, and expenses.

TurboTax

TurboTax is offering $20 off TurboTax Self-Employed.

Hertz

Hertz is now offering rental discounts for Dashers.

General Assembly

General Assembly offers 50 percent off any one-day workshop. If you’ve been thinking about learning coding or tech, this could help launch a new career.

Catch

Catch offers healthcare, tax withholding, and retirement savings options.

Stride Health

Stride Health provides access to healthcare savings, vision, and dental plans.

GoodRx

GoodRx is now offering up to 40 percent off GoodRx Gold for eleven months, for prescription discounts.

Caviar Security

The Dasher app contains strong security features to protect your personal information.

One thing to note is that driving comes with the risk of being out on the open road. Accidents can happen when you least expect them.

To stay on the safe side, be sure that your car is in proper working condition. Make sure that your tires are good and that you have a legit insurance policy.

DoorDash offers insurance too, which will cover you while you’re actively making deliveries.

Caviar Customer Support

If you run into any issues while making deliveries or trying to cash out, there are several ways to get help.

You can reach Caviar support by phone at 1-855-431-0459, and there’s also an online chat option if you’d rather not speak with someone.

DoorDash Driver App Ratings

The DoorDash Driver app has only 3.1 out of 5 stars in Google Play, with some users reporting that the app often freezes and crashes. If you’re an Android user, prepare for some potential turbulence when using the app. You may have to contact support at some point.

On the other hand, the iPhone version has a stellar ranking with 4.7 out of 5 stars. The iPhone version isn’t perfect either, but users seem to be more satisfied with this version.

Interestingly, both Android and iPhone seem unhappy with the in-app map component.

As one Apple user says, “The mapping system recommends going the wrong way down one-way streets and to drive on the wrong side of a divided street.”

Caviar Delivery Pros and Cons

These are some of the advantages and disadvantages of Caviar.

  • Access DoorDash and Caviar through the same app for higher earning potential
  • Schedule delivery times in advance
  • Deliver anywhere the app is active
  • Higher-priced menu items mean better tips
  • Perks and rewards for drivers

Cons

  • Available only in select cities
  • Android app can be buggy
  • No job security
  • Dasher app can get busy
  • No benefits

Alternatives to Caviar

If you’re trying to maximize your delivery income — as you should — it pays to use more than one platform.

Here are some of the top alternatives to Caviar (and DoorDash) to consider.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats serves more than 6,000 global cities. The latest data shows Uber Eats has a 23 percent market share for food delivery — well behind DoorDash at 56 percent.

Grubhub

Grubhub is a leading restaurant delivery app with a presence in more than 4,000 cities. Grubhub currently has a 16 percent market share.

Postmates

Postmates goes beyond food delivery. When driving for Postmates, you’ll also deliver items like household and office supplies. Postmates is active in 3,500 cities but has a market share of only 4%.

Caviar FAQs

These are some of the most frequently asked questions about Caviar.

Is Caviar a good delivery service?

Yes, Caviar is a solid delivery service. If Caviar is available in your city and you want to make deliveries, you should probably try it out.

Can you make a lot of money with Caviar?

You can expect to earn around $20 per hour with Caviar. For most people, this is not going to replace your full-time job. However, if you pick up other orders through the Dasher app, you could bring in some decent side hustle money.

How does Caviar food delivery work?

Caviar connects delivery drivers with local, higher-end restaurants. The app is basically a food aggregator, offering a seamless experience for ordering gourmet delivery food.

The Bottom Line

As a driver, the most compelling reason to work for Caviar is the prospect of earning higher tips.

I’m also thinking beyond the fact that you can earn some decent side hustle money. By delivering the best food from top-rated local restaurants, and learning about each establishment’s menu items, you may also make interesting job connections.

Who knows? Maybe you can land a wait staff or bartending gig that pays double or more than Caviar does.

The elephant in the room is that Caviar is available only in a handful of major metropolitan areas. But if Caviar is accessible to you, and you’re already out there making deliveries for other services, it makes a lot of sense to give it a shot.
