Defying Covid: Farm exports likely to surge to record $45 billion led by rice, marine products

[ad_1] Led by a resurgence in marine exports and a sustained rise in non-basmati rice supplies, India’s outbound shipments of farm products will likely hit a record $45 billion in FY22, defying supply-chain woes, a senior government official told FE. The emergence of the new Covid strain — Omicron — is unlikely to dent farm exports, which have remained largely insulated from the Covid onslaught so far, he added. Between April and October, farm exports rose 24% from a year before to $27 billion even on a decent base. Despatches of farm products grew almost 18% last fiscal to $41.9 billion, far outperforming a 7% drop in overall merchandise exports in the wake of the pandemic. Sustained growth in farm exports, which have often performed below par, remains critical to the country realising its ambitious merchandise export target of $400 billion for FY22. “Although supply-chain issues can potentially weigh down physical shipments a bit, demand is very much there. Even with the emergence of the Omicron variety, we don’t expect farm exports to get impacted much,” said the official. “Wider geographical spread, concerted push by the government and bumper farm production have ensured that we will have another year of strong exports,” he added. Moreover, to soften the blow of a spurt in shipping costs over the past one year, the government has reintroduced the Transport and Marketing Assistance (TMA) scheme, with wider coverage and much larger support, for one year through March 2022. Under this, the government reimburses farm exporters a certain portion of freight charges and offers assistance for marketing of select products. Rates of assistance under the revamped scheme, too, have been raised by 50% for exports by sea and 100% for those by air. Supported by elevated global commodity prices, farm exports hit a record $43.2 billion in FY14, before witnessing a drop for two straight years. The exports started rising again from FY17 but lost tempo in FY20. In the current fiscal, marine products, grains and cotton turned out to be the major drivers of farm exports. Between April and October, marine exports reversed last year’s slide and shot up by 37% to $4.6 billion, while non-basmati supplies grew by 47% to $3.5 billion. Similarly, exports of sugar rose by 34% to $2 billion, cotton by 106% to $1.2 billion, wheat by 439% to $872 million and castor oil by 40% to $722 billion. [ad_2] Source link

Most Asian stocks track U.S. gains after S&P 500 closed at record high on the first trading day of 2022

[ad_1] Most Asian stocks rose Tuesday after the S&P 500 closed at a record high on the first trading day of 2022. Treasuries maintained losses. Japan led an advance as more Asian markets traded after the new year break. The U.S. gains followed European stocks which hit unprecedented highs even as trading volumes remained light because of holidays. On Tuesday, U.S. futures were little changed. Benchmark Treasury yields steadied after climbing across the curve. The yield on the 10-year note topped 1.60% in its worst start to a year since 2009 as investors braced for Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes in 2022. The dollar held gains. Hong Kong shares edged higher after their worst start to a year since 2019. Chinese equities weakened as investors weigh the possibility of further policy easing with data showing that property companies saw sales drop last year. Markets are anticipating an uptick in volatility. Investors are navigating headwinds from the omicron variant, supply-chain disruptions and more central banks winding back pandemic stimulus that propelled a third year of double-digit returns for equities. U.S. December payroll data and minutes from the Fed’s meeting last month later this week may build a case for tightening to begin sooner. “We expect 2022 to be far more challenging from an investment perspective,” Heather Wald, vice president at Bel Air Investment Advisors, said in an emailed note. “Rarely has a market delivered three consecutive years of double-digit returns, as we have seen from 2019-2021. With the Federal Reserve set to accelerate tightening and a fairly valued stock market, we anticipate more muted returns for the S&P next year but still expect equities to remain attractive versus other liquid asset classes.” Among individual stocks, Tesla Inc. surged as the carmaker navigated supply-chain disruptions to report blowout deliveries for the fourth quarter. Apple Inc. gained, giving it a $3 trillion market value. Elsewhere, crude oil in New York held gains to trade around $76 a barrel following news Libya’s crude output is expected to fall to the lowest in more than a year and ahead of an OPEC+ meeting on Tuesday to discuss production. Bitcoin hovered around $46,000. Some of the main moves in markets: Stocks S&P 500 futures were little changed as of 10:51 a.m. in Tokyo. The S&P 500 rose 0.6% Nasdaq 100 futures were little changed. The Nasdaq 100 rose 1.1% Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index advanced 1.5% Hang Seng Index rose 0.2% Kospi index fell 0.3% Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.3% Currencies The Japanese yen was at 115.39 per dollar The offshore yuan was at 6.3741 per dollar The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index dipped 0.1% The euro traded at $1.1309 Bonds Australia’s 10-year bond yield increased nine basis points to 1.76% The yield on 10-year Treasuries held at 1.62% Commodities Gold was at $1,805 an ounce, up 0.2% West Texas Intermediate crude was at $76.30 a barrel, up 0.3% [ad_2] Source link

A Peek Into Last Week (+ my 10 goals for this week!)

[ad_1] She loves her Daddy so much! Getting in a few last cuddles before we head back to TN. My mom showing Kierstyn all of the different cousins and aunts and uncles (they have family pictures on their fridge). Hotel room activities with a toddler: set them up in front of everyone and have them lead their own version of Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes. Home! It was so good to sleep in our own beds again! Mixing up Baby D’s formula — he’s tube weaning right now which means that he’s having small amounts of a higher calorie mix to allow room in his stomach for oral feeds, too. This is an example of what Kierstyn and Baby D’s meals look like right now. Our feeding therapist has us working toward getting Baby D to eat a Tablespoon of carbs/starch, a Tablespoon of fruits/veggies, and a Tablespoon of protein at every meal. We’re not there yet, (a lot of food gets spit back out because he’s still learning to swallow consistently), but that’s what we’re shooting for! Post-vacation laundry! My sister-in-law gave me this loose tea and tea strainer for Christmas and I love it for an afternoon pick-me-up along with some chocolate that Jesse’s parents gave us in our stocking! Since Jesse was gone at the funeral for New Year’s Eve and I wasn’t feeling well, I sent Kathrynne to the store to buy fun snacks fir the evening for a snack-y “dinner”. We started the new year off with a tornado warning! And then two days later, we got snow! Welcome to weather in the south! Helping Daddy fix the bathroom sink. My 10 Goals for Last Week Last week didn’t pan out like I’d planned — but that’s just life sometimes! We traveled home from Kansas on Wednesday and Thursday and some of us (including me) ended up getting sick (probably all of the weather changes + traveling + not getting a lot sleep while traveling). In addition, one of our longtime friends passed away so as soon as we got home, Jesse turned back around 30 minutes later and left for the airport to fly back to Kansas to be with the family the day of the funeral. So he was for two days for that while we tried to recover and get back into the swing of things after being gone for 8 days. So while I didn’t get as much done on my goals list, I am celebrating the progress I made! Personal Goals Make a Spotify playlist with my favorite uplifting songs. Delete 5000 photos and videos from my phone. Reading Goals Finish reading Pray Confidently and Consistently. Finish reading The Story of You. Family Goals Have a family Game Night. Go on a date with Jesse. Business/Blogging Goals Write a post with my Goals for 2022. Write a post on my Top Books Read in 2021. Book Goals Read 10 chapters + intro and epilogue aloud to Jesse. Write 3000 words for the end sections of the book. My 10 Goals for This Week Thursday through Sunday of this week I’ll be attending the US Figure Skating Championship with Kaitlynn. We are so excited they are being held in Nashville — especially on an Olympics year! I’ll share some pictures and videos on Instagram, if you are interested!) So I tried to plan my goals with this in mind! Personal Goals Delete 500 photos and videos from my phone. Do one extra house-cleaning project every day (follow along on Instagram for details!) Reading Goals Finish reading The Story of You and Bloom. Finish listening to  The Way it Should Be. Family Goals Have a family Game Night. Take Kaitlynn to the US Figure Skating Championships. Business/Blogging Goals Write a post with my Goals for 2022. Write a post on my Word of the Year for 2022. Book Goals Go through all of the rough draft chapters of the book to make edits. Write 2000 words for the end sections of the book. [ad_2] Source link
