Innovation in agriculture: PM Modi inaugurates world’s first nano urea plant

[ad_1] By Nayan Dave In view of seamless supply of fertilisers at affordable prices, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed on the innovation and use of newer technology while inaugurating the world’s first nano urea (liquid) plant of Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) virtually during a seminar on ‘Prosperity through Co-operation’ at Gandhinagar. Addressing a gathering of co-operative leaders post inauguration at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Modi said that a small bottle (500 ml) of nano urea is equivalent to one 50 kg bag of granular urea currently used by farmers. Terming the innovation as revolutionary, the Prime Minister said that it would bring the logistic cost of urea to almost zero. “Eight more such nano urea plants will be set up across the country. The innovation should not be limited to urea only, our scientists are also working to develop other nano fertilisers to ensure easy availability of important agriculture inputs,” he said in a seminar on Sahakar thi Samruddhi (Prosperity through Co-operation). Though India is the second largest consumer of urea across the globe, the country is third in production of urea and hence a large quantity is being imported to pacify the need of agriculture sector, he said, adding that with a view to make the nation self-reliant in urea, the government has decided to restart five shut factories in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Telangana. Factories in Uttar Pradesh and Telangana have become operational and remaining three will start in coming days, he added. Prime Minister Modi had also inaugurated a 200-bed multi-speciality hospital in Atkot town of Gujarat’s Rajkot district in the morning. While addressing a gathering after this event, Modi — who completed eight years in office as prime minister on May 26 — also said that he did not spare any effort in serving the country and did not indulge in anything that would make the people of the country hang their heads in shame. During his speech, he gave an account of the work his government carried out in the last eight years. [ad_2] Source link

Beyond the rainbow: Reflections of a changing mindset

[ad_1] There’s something that stays with the audience when they watch the emotional coming-out scene of Rajkummar Rao in the film, Badhaai Do. He remarks, ‘Gay hai hum’, as he supports his wife’s sexuality and explains to his shocked family members how this was not a disease but a natural choice for many. Similarly, in Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Vaani Kapoor’s life is a struggle, as she fights to be what she is—a trans woman. However, as she falls in love with a boy (Ayushmann Khurrana), the conflict and resolution of the plot take the audience through the highs and lows of the journey of trans people. Meanwhile, Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is a typical Bollywood romantic drama on the lines of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge but with a twist—the journey of falling in love with a man of the same sex and the family’s opposition and eventual acceptance of the relationship. These Bollywood titles are not just examples of how the film industry is finally reflecting this side of society but also how mindsets are changing, one film and one story at a time. The 13th edition of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival, which will be held during the ‘Pride Month’ (June), aims to screen such films that are agents of change when it comes to homosexuality. Conceptualised in 2010, the annual fest is both a celebratory space for the LGBTQ+ community and a space for the audience to get a peek into their lives and dispel myths and misconceptions. The power of cinema to change perceptions of the general population towards the LGBTQ+ community is the reason we organise KASHISH year after year, says Sridhar Rangayan, the festival director. He adds, “We know that KASHISH has made an impact, and we sincerely hope that stigma and discrimination of LGBTQ+ person will end soon, and we too will have an equal place in society.” In 2016, Manoj Bajpayee’s Aligarh won critical acclaim for its depiction of the story of Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras on whom a sting operation was carried out to determine his sexual orientation. Talking about the way that Indian mainstream cinema has been portraying the LGBTQ+ stories for a few years now, Rangayan says that Indian mainstream cinema is still coming of age with a few good portrayals in some of the films that have been released over the past decade— namely Aligarh, Angry Indian Goddesses, Evening Shadows, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Badhaai Do. “But these are just a handful, and it is really sad that we don’t have more coming from Hindi cinema which produces close to 500-600 films every year. But what is heartening are the independent films, the documentaries and short films, and regional language films, which portray with great sensitivity and candidness the true lived-in experiences of LGBTQ+ persons,” Rangayan says, while adding that there shouldn’t be LGBTQ+ characters just for pink washing, but there should be substantial pivotal roles for them. “We also should have real life transgender persons playing transgender roles and not cisgender men or women playing these parts,” he says, referring to how heterosexual actors have portrayed trans roles so far in Hindi films. Of the over 184 films, 42 are in competition in nine categories, vying for a total cash award of Rs 2,25,000, and the KASHISH Golden Butterfly Trophies. Rangayan reveals that KASHISH is also distributing Indian LGBTQ+ films on Disney Hotstar and MxPlayer to target a larger audience. Films across languages like Antharam, Chhoti Shameez, Holy Wound, Dal Bhat, Her Canvas, Man & Wife, Sheer Qorma and Partner, among others, are also set to be screened at the festival. The biggest south Asian queer film festival is also the first LGBTQ+ fest in India to be held in a mainstream theatre with approval by the information and broadcasting ministry. The physical festival will be held from June 1 to 5 at Liberty cinema and from June 2 to 4 at Alliance Francaise. The online festival will be held between June 3 and 12 at http://online.mumbaiqueerfest.com. Registrations are currently open at https://www.instamojo.com/ KASHISH_MIQFF/ [ad_2] Source link

Lack of infra for alternative; delay ban on plastic by six months, say firms

[ad_1] A recent ban on single-use plastic effective from July 1 is likely to challenge food and beverage companies. An alternative like a paper straw will fetch a cost higher than an affordable price offered as of now by different brands. Brands feel the integrated plastic straws come as part of juice and milk-based drink packs and do not contribute much to plastic pollution as they are part of the recycling and processing chain already put in place by companies which is part of their EPR mandate. With no sustainable alternative for integrated plastic straws available today, Dabur India is working to import paper straws. Importing would have cost implications on companies and lead to loss of revenue to the government exchequer. “It goes against the nature of Atmanirbhar Bharat and puts additional cost strain on companies during these inflationary times. Some state regulators have permitted use of biodegradable plastic straws and paper straws, the infrastructure for producing these straws at scale is non-existent in India today,” says Mohit Malhotra, chief executive officer, Dabur India which will soon launch shampoo refill pouches to reduce plastic in packaging. This fiscal, the brand had launched carton-free toothpaste packaging. Beverage player Parle Agro that makes brands like Frooti, Appy, Appy Fizz, B-Fizz, SMOODH, Bailley, Frio, Dhishoom and Bombay 99, has urged the Centre to postpone plastic ban by six months to make the necessary changes in technology, and sourcing, ensure smooth transition to environment friendly options of Paper or PLA. The brand said the current available capacity to provide a replacement of plastic straws with PLA straws or paper straws by a local Indian manufacturer is 1.3 million straws per day as opposed to the actual requirement of approximately 6 million straws per day, and the hasty ban will negatively impact the industry and overall businesses of numerous players in the FMCG and beverage segment. Importing straws will be 6 to 8 times more expensive making the cost of the product unaffordable. For Parle Agro, 50% of the company’s turnover is from rural markets as their products are priced to cater to consumers across India. Price rise will lead to a fall in demand and affect sales. “The postponement will allow packaging companies to build the right infrastructure needed to source locally. Even getting approvals from regulatory bodies after appropriate testing to manufacture PLA straws will require time,” says Schauna Chauhan, CEO, Parle Agro, sharing the percentage increase in cost from plastic to PLA is approximately 122% but if companies were to import the straws, the cost goes up by 259% and 278 % for PLA and paper straws respectively.  Brands like Mother Dairy have taken a conscious call of limiting plastic usage. There have been no plastic spoons and loose straws for the past three years. “The brand has replaced all plastic spoons with wooden spoons and will replace the currently available straws with carton straws which are under the implementation phase. We began the plastic waste collection and recycling/co-processing initiative in FY2018-19,” says Manish Bandlish, managing director, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable. To address the challenge of restrictions on use of plastic straws, Asepto, the liquid packaging brand of UFlex Limited, UFlex Limited, flexible packaging material solution and polymer science company will start manufacturing U-shaped paper straw for aseptic liquid packaging business. The manufacturing line is being set up at aseptic liquid packaging plant in Sanand, Gujarat. The paper straw manufacturing line will offer a production capacity of approx 2.4 billion straws annually utilised for portion packs for juices and other beverages.
