Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi police summon Nupur Sharma, Naveen Kumar Jindal over remarks against Prophet Mohammad

[ad_1] The Bhiwandi police in Maharashtra have summoned suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma to record a statement on Monday in connection with her alleged objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad, an official said on Sunday.Besides, expelled BJP functionary Naveen Kumar Jindal has also been asked by the Bhiwandi police in Thane district to record his statement on June 15 over his alleged controversial tweets against Prophet Mohammad, senior police inspector Chetan Kakade told reporters. The Bhiwandi police had registered a case against Sharma following a complaint lodged by a representative of the Raza Academy on May 30, he said. They had also registered a case against Jindal, the official said. Earlier, the Mumbra police in Thane asked Sharma to appear before them on June 22 to record her statement over her remarks. The Mumbai Police have also summoned her to record a statement on June 25 in connection with her remarks about the Prophet during a TV debate triggered a huge controversy. The police had asked for a video of the debate from the news channel concerned. The BJP had on June 5 suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Delhi BJP media head Jindal after their alleged derogatory remarks against the Prophet led to an outrage in India and Gulf countries. Covid cases rise: It’s business as usual in Maharashtra

[ad_1] Maharashtra has reported the biggest jump in Covid infections in the last four months with 3,081 new cases, with Mumbai alone accounting for 1,956 cases. The number of active cases till Friday night was 9,191. According to the Maharashtra state health department, there were no Covid-related deaths on Friday. Sudhir Mehta, lead and co-ordinator, Pune Platform for Covid-19 Response, said the number of cases was on the upswing and, as expected, Covid was lingering with smouldering and sudden upticks. “Incidence is high but the severity is low. We do not expect any adverse impact as we have to live with Covid and Covid-appropriate behaviour,” he said. Meanwhile, there has been no impact on industrial activities or business events in Pune or Mumbai, Mehta, who is also the president of the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce and Industries and CMD of Pinnacle Industries, said. Quantitative social scientist and founder of CPC Analytics, Sahil Deo, who has been tracking Covid-19 data for two years, said even as cases were rising, the severity has been low and there is hardly any hospitalisation, so there is no concern as of now. On Monday, the Maharashtra government announced the re-opening of schools. However, wearing masks has not been made mandatory. Meanwhile, it is business as usual across the state with malls reporting high footfalls. Pune’s Amanora Mall has seen footfalls and sales increase and cross the pre-pandemic level with the last three months showing exceptional growth of 25-30% above the pre-pandemic level, Surojit Singh Rajpurohit, chief operating officer of Amanora Mall, said. Rajpurohit said they would be watching the situation closely and it would all depend on how the next 10 to 15 days pan out. Nexus Westend mall in Pune and Nexus Seawoods in Mumbai, too, has seen a sustained recovery trend in the first quarter of FY22 across its portfolio and was at close to 130% of its pre-Covid sales till the end of May 2022. The June 1 to 11 period saw 100% footfall and sales had been at similar 130% levels. There was no drop in sales or footfall this month so far. As cases have risen, there has been an increase in the demand for self-test kits for Covid-19. Hasmukh Rawal, founder and MD of Mylab Discovery Solutions, said they have seen an increase in the demand for CoviSelf with a 30-40% month-on-month increase in May and June first week. “We saw an uptick in demand from north around mid-May and this month the rise in demand was seen in the western and southern parts of the country,” Raval said. Mylab has a capacity to produce 1.5 million test kits a day. To ensure adequate testing for early identification of cases and getting an accurate picture of the level of infection spread, Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan had on Thursday written to states and Union territories to ensure a high level of testing and monitoring the share of RT-PCR in total tests conducted. He urged the states not to lower their guard and build on the progress made so far to bring the pandemic situation under control. [ad_2] Source link

Fifth Column by Tavleen Singh: Religion and politics do not mix

[ad_1] The storm that two disgraced BJP spokesmen have caused because of their reckless comments about the Prophet of Islam has now begun to cause harm within India. Last week anger erupted outside mosques after Friday prayers in cities across the country. This is a fire that could burn down the edifice that Narendra Modi has so carefully constructed using the pillars of welfarism and nationalism. In the advertisements that promote his government’s achievements, he says that he has worked for the nation’s good like a ‘member of the family’. Did he not notice that there were almost no Muslims in this family and that his party spokesmen just made this brutally clear? If religion had not become part of our political discourse, none of this would have happened. But, because it has, we have a situation in which BJP spokespersons appear to have been encouraged to demean Islam. Wiser spokespersons would have known that to mock the Prophet of Islam was opening the doors to a discourse that can only end badly because then why should Hindus mind if the response is for Muslims to start mocking Hindu religious practices and gods? We may not have books that ordain punishments for unbelievers, but we have a caste system that kept a huge swathe of Hindus outside temples because priests decided that they were ‘untouchable’. What is essential as Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal may have discovered is for the official spokespersons of political parties to stay away from religious commentary. If this lesson has been learned from the shame and embarrassment their words have caused India, then some good may have come from this ugly incident. This seems unlikely, though, if you keep in mind that for months now, BJP spokespersons have been intentionally spreading hatred against Muslims and Islam. In achieving this end, they have been assisted by friendly, private news channels and by that vast theatre of absurdity and abuse that is offered by social media. They have used it mostly to make the case that Indian Muslims are all traitors because they put religion above the nation. No opportunity has been missed to make this case. When COVID arrived in Delhi, preachers from Islamic countries were blamed for bringing it with them to a religious conference. Many spent months in jail. When the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) caused Muslims to protest a discriminatory amendment, they were called traitors. When Article 370 was abrogated abruptly and without consulting the Kashmiri people, those who protested in the Valley were also called traitors. The list goes on and on. The campaign against Muslims and Islam by BJP officials has been most effective on Twitter and has a pattern. As someone who routinely points out that gathering in a mob to lynch some middle-aged Muslim farmer shows despicable cowardice, I am routinely bombarded with pictures of Hindus who have been killed by Muslims. The first tweet will usually accuse me for not speaking up when the victims are Hindu and then will come a barrage of tweets that attack me personally. The message I get is that if I continue to say that targeting a huge minority ceaselessly will end up harming India more than the Muslim community, then I am a traitor. The harm that it has done to India is now apparent. The attack on the Prophet by spokespersons of India’s ruling party has angered the leaders of Islamic countries with whom we do a great deal of business and from where Indian workers send half of our total remittances. These workers are among our poorest citizens. They already suffer discrimination and horrible working conditions but are forced to continue living their sad, lonely lives because it is not possible for them to earn that well in the home country in the jobs they do. After this episode, will they face more discrimination? Will some countries ban them from entering? Clearly the Government of India was unprepared for the outrage that has come from nearly every Islamic country, or the fallout would have been more deftly handled. The Vice President of India was in Qatar when the insult to the Prophet started to cause a furore in the Islamic world. A banquet that was meant to honour him was also cancelled, ostensibly over a Covid incident. Surely, the poor man could have been given some advance warning. Then came that description of official spokesmen of the ruling party as ‘fringe elements’, which will go down as one of the silliest responses in diplomatic history. The finale has been abject apologies from India on behalf of the BJP, but will the BJP learn any lessons from shaming Bharat Mata in this way? Will it tell its spokesmen to avoid attacking Islam in the manner they have so far? Will they turn down the hate campaign against Muslims that has now begun to create riots across the country? If these things happen it is possible that a small amount of good can come from this very unpleasant episode. But Nupur Sharma is on record saying that after she made her remarks about the Prophet, she was assured by senior BJP leaders that they would support her. This means that the campaign of hatred against Muslims will continue until it reaches a point when it causes another international embarrassment for India. What it will do to the fabric of Indian society is another story altogether. [ad_2] Source link

Youth leaders raise voice against forced labour and exploitation

[ad_1] A group of youth leaders, some of whom had survived tumultuous childhoods as forced child labourers, were felicitated in the national capital on Friday. Together, they rejected the forces of exploitation and injustice and demanded a collective effort to end child labour in the country. These youth leaders were participating in the national consultation on the eradication of child labour by 2025, organised by Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF).  These youth leaders demanded a special scheme for the rescue and rehabilitation of child labourers. They sought the establishment of residential schools for rescued children and enhanced budgetary allocation for child welfare schemes, especially for child labourers. For an effective rescue and rehabilitation policy, they urged the government to declare all 749 districts in India under the National Child Labour Project Scheme (NCLPS) and initiate a technology-based monitoring scheme for its effective implementation.  The nine youth leaders who were felicitated have been a catalyst of social change. At present, they lead from the front to end multiple forms of child exploitation and other socio-economic inequalities in their own villages and states.  Surjeet Lodhi, 18, from Vidisha district in Madhya Pradesh has helped scores of children in his village get access to education. For his efforts to bring about a positive change, Surjeet was conferred with the prestigious Diana Award in 2021. His crusade against alcohol and spreading awareness for education has made him an inspiration for other children.  “The existing law against child labour should be effectively implemented. We also request the government to pass the anti-trafficking bill as most of the children are trafficked for forced labour,” Surjeet said.  Five of the felicitated youth leaders are from Rajasthan. Three among them: Amar Lal, Tara Banjara, Rajesh Jatav recently represented India in the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO’s) fifth global conference on the elimination of child labour in Durban.  25-year-old Amar Lal works as a child rights lawyer and a social activist. From the age of seven years, he worked with his father at a stone quarry to supplement his family’s income. He was rescued by Kailash Satyarthi in 2001. Tara Banjara, 17, from Nimdi village in Alwar district spent her childhood years as a road construction worker.  She is now the voice of her nomadic banjara community.  At present, she is pursuing her bachelor’s degree and aspires to be a police officer.  Rajesh Jatav, 21, hails from Akbarpur village in Bharatpur district. An eight-year-old Rajesh was rescued from a brick kiln and brought to Bal Ashram-a rehabilitation and training centre of BBA at Viratnagar. At present, he is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in science at Delhi University.  Two girls from the state: Lalita Duhariya, 17 and Payal Jangid, 19, are notable for their contributions to bringing social transformation. Both have received the Reebok fit to fight award. Lalita hails from Dera village of Jaipur district. She is an active member of Bal Mitra Gram or Child-Friendly Village–an initiative of KSCF to ensure every child is free, safe and educated. An awardee of the Ashoka Young Changemaker Award, she has been actively involved in raising awareness about the importance of girls’ education and preventing school dropouts.  “I travelled miles, knocked on every door of the houses in and around my village to check if there are children who are not attending school. We would have long discussions with the families and encourage them to send their children to school,” Lalita said.  Payal Jangid, from Hinsla village in Alwar district is an integral part of the Bal Mitra Gram. She has fought against child labour, child labour and the social evil of restraining women through ghoonghat or veil. In 2013, when members of the Swedish council had come to review her work, they were impressed and chose her as a jury member for the World’s children’s prize.  She is also the recipient of Global Goal keeper award given by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “I make efforts to unite the children of my village. Children must come together and raise their voices against all forms of injustice. Education is the greatest tool of empowerment for us,” she said.  Three children from Jharkhand who were felicitated include Neeraj Murmu, 22, Champa Kumari, 16 and Radha Kumari 17. These youth leaders have sparked the movement of social change in their state and are enduring examples of grit, strength and determination.  Neeraj Murmu hails from Duriakaram village in Giridih district and toiled in the Mica mines from the young age of 10 years. He was rescued by BBA activists in 2011. He then resolved to fight child labour. Murmu has rescued more than 20 children from the Mica mines and raised awareness about the importance of education in fighting forced labour. As a youth leader, he linked several impoverished families to government-sponsored schemes. He received the Diana Award in 2020.  “Empowering children by providing them with education can fight the menace of child labour. To make our villages safe from trafficking for child labour, collective efforts from the village residents as well as government officials are required. Along with a proper rehabilitation policy of rescued children, we need stricter laws,” he said.  Yet another Diana Awardee from the state was Champa Kumari. She was rescued from the Mica mines by BBA activists at the age of 12 years. Over the years, she has fought against child marriage and worked relentlessly to make her district free from child labour. Her resolve to end multiple forms of child exploitation has won her numerous accolades and awards.  “I will continue to fight against child labour and the social evil of child marriage. It is a tough fight, but worth fighting for,” she said Another youth pioneering the movement against child marriage, child labour and child trafficking is Radha Kumari from Madhuban panchayat in Koderma district. For her dogged efforts in preventing child marriages, and empowering girls, the district administration has designated her as the district’s brand ambassador against child marriage.  “To stop child marriages completely,
