[ad_1] Non-bank finance companies (NBFCs) are likely to rely more on banks for their funding requirements as interest rates are hardening in the capital market, says a report. As the sector moves towards banks for meeting its funding requirements, smaller NBFCs could witness a sharp increase in their funding costs, India Ratings and Research said in a report. “The borrowings of non-bank finance companies (NBFCs) could get skewed to banks in FY23, given the hardening of rates in the capital markets,” the agency said in a report on Wednesday. The shift in the NBFCs’ funding mix in FY23 will be driven by a rise in the proportion of short-term funding by way of commercial papers and debenture funding getting replaced by bank funding to a certain extent. A huge quantum of borrowings to be raised by large NBFCs would lead to a further increase in the banks’ exposure to the sector, and small NBFCs thus could face crowding out, the report said. The agency said with the rise in interest rates, following a 90 basis points (bps) increase in repo rate by RBI in two tranches, NBFCs would see a faster increase in the incremental funding cost than that for banks on account of their institutional funding.Around one-third of the NBFCs’ borrowings would come up for refinancing in FY23, it noted. Furthermore, bank funding on the NBFC balance sheet is mostly floating in nature and would also witness upward repricing.However, the agency said that the Marginal Cost of Funds based lending Rate (MCLR)-linked funding would see a lagged increase in cost compared to the borrowings linked to market benchmarks such as repo and T-Bill. The report said the increase in rates could lead to a 90-100 bps year-on-year rise in funding cost in FY23. There could be some pass on of the rise in select few segments. The agency said the prevailing uncertain operating environment has led NBFCs to maintain excess liquidity on the balance sheet in the range of 5-10 per cent of assets, which impacted the profitability due to the negative carry of excess liquidity. However, NBFCs would dilute the liquidity buffers to a certain extent to reduce the impact of negative carry with the improvement in the operating environment and increase in the funding cost, the agency said. The 40,226 new cases reported Wednesday marked the country’s highest daily jump in more than two months, although hospitalisations and deaths remain stable. Baek Gyeongran, South Korea’s top infectious disease expert, attributed the rising case counts to people’s waning immunities following vaccinations and prior infections and a major removal of social distancing measures since April as the nation wiggled out of an omicron surge. Health workers are also witnessing a “rapid spread” of BA.5, which is seen as the most transmissible variant of omicron yet, Baek said. South Korea had previously given second booster shots to people who are 60 or older and those with compromised immune systems. Officials are now expanding the eligibility of those shots to people who are 50 or older and all adults with pre-existing medical conditions. Weeklong quarantines will be maintained for people who test positive. Officials say the country may see daily case counts of 200,000 by mid-August or September if infections continue to grow. However, they don’t have immediate plans to meaningfully elevate social distancing restrictions, which have been effectively stripped down to an indoor mask mandate over the past months. Baek, the commissioner of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, said the government will focus on expanding booster shots and securing larger supplies of antiviral pills to suppress hospitalizations and deaths. [ad_1] A faculty member at St Stephen’s College stated that the college has undermined its own constitution when it entered into a legal battle with the Delhi University without consulting the college governing body. The charge was levelled by Nandita Narain, an assistant professor at St Stephen’s College, who in a letter to the governing body chairperson, called the move by the college a ‘gross violation’ of its constitution. In a letter to Bishop Prem Chand Singh, Narain, also a member of the college governing body, also questioned whether the college followed the procedure for the reappointment of principal John Varghese. The college had recently filed a writ petition challenging a Delhi University’s letter to it asking it to withdraw its prospectus for the undergraduate courses for the academic year 2022-23. As per the newly-brought entrance-based admission system, the college was asked to admit students giving 85% weightage to Common University Entrance Test (CUET) and 15% weightage to college interview for its unreserved seats. The CUET-UG will be conducted from July 15 to August 10, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced last week. St Stephen’s College and Delhi University have been at loggerheads over the admissions process with the former insisting on retaining its right to conduct interviews for admission of all categories of students. Narain in her letter called it surprising that the governing body was not informed by the college about its decision to file a writ petition against the university. “Initiation of legal proceedings in the matter of admissions without the prior approval of the College Governing body is, in my view, in gross violation of Clause 15 of our College Constitution,” she wrote.
