Ranveer Singh ‘hearts’ Lalit Modi-Sushmita Sen relationship; Shilpa Shetty, Harbhajan also react

[ad_1] Thursday’s bombshell news about Lalit Modi and Sushmita Sen’s relationship turned heads and grabbed headlines as Indians tried to wrap their heads around how the most unlikely of partnerships bloomed. Businessman Modi, who was the brains behind the Indian Premier League, dropped a series of romantic pictures with Bollywood diva Sushmita. Modi, currently settled in London, addressed the former Miss Universe as his “better half” and called the relationship a “new beginning”. Apart from netizens, the announcement also caught Bolly star Ranveer Singh’s attention. Reacting to Modi’s post on Instagram, Ranveer shared a heart emoticon and an amulet in the comments section. Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh also shared a heart emoticon and a lightning icon. Actor Shilpa Shetty and celebrity stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania ‘liked’ the post, while designer Nandita Mahtani shared heart and hug emojis. Modi married Minal Sagrani in October of 1991 and shared two children — son Ruchir and daughter Aliya. Modi also adopted Karima Sagrani, Minal’s daughter from her first marriage. Minal died of cancer in 2018. Sushmita, on the other hand, was in a relationship with model Rohman Shawl since 2018 before breaking up last year. In a recent conversation with author and former actor Twinkle Khanna, Sushmita shared that she had been close to marriage thrice before. Just back in london after a whirling global tour #maldives # sardinia with the families – not to mention my #better looking partner @sushmitasen47 – a new beginning a new life finally. Over the moon. ????????????????????????????????????????. In love does not mean marriage YET. BUT ONE THAT For sure pic.twitter.com/WL8Hab3P6V — Lalit Kumar Modi (@LalitKModi) July 14, 2022 “I came close to getting married thrice, all three times God saved me. I can’t tell you what disasters followed with their respective lives. God protected me, also because God is protecting these two kids, he can’t let me get into a messy affair,” she said. Sushmita is a single mom to Alisah and Renee. She adopted Renee in 2000 and Alisah in 2010. The actor won the Miss Universe title in 1994 and debuted in Bollywood with the 1996 film Dastak. Her filmography includes Biwi No 1, Main Hoon Na, Do Knot Disturb, Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya, and No Problem. She made her comeback with the Emmy-nominated series Aarya. Rupee falls to hit 80 mark briefly, may depreciate further on strong US dollar, pessimistic market sentiments

[ad_1] The Indian rupee is likely to depreciate further on Friday amid strong dollar and pessimistic global market sentiments. Additionally, consistent FII outflows and concerns on looming recession may hurt the local unit. “Further, investors are expected to remain vigilant ahead of crucial economic data from the US and statements from Fed officials. US$INR (July) is expected to trade in a range of 79.60-80.20,” said ICICIDirect. In the previous session, rupee briefly touched Rs 80 mark intraday on the offshore non-deliverable forward (NDF) market. The domestic currency settled at a new record low of 79.90, down 18 paise from the previous close of 79.81. The fall was recorded due to a firm dollar in overseas markets and capital outflows. Sugandha Sachdeva, Vice President – Commodity and Currency Research, Religare Broking Ltd “The Indian rupee has rolled down to another record low as the unabated red-hot inflation data in the US has raised the case for a full percentage point rate hike at the Fed’s meeting later this month, given the Fed chair’s stance that inflation must be brought down as quickly as possible. US annual consumer prices jumped by a scorching 9.1% in June, the highest in four decades, topping expectations of an 8.8% rise. The aggressive policy course by the US Fed to curb rising price pressures is exacerbating fears of a weakening growth outlook and leading to risk aversion in the markets. Besides, we have seen a relentless rise in the dollar index, while the euro has been hit hard as it tumbled below parity against the dollar for the first time in almost 20 years” “Europe is grappling with an energy supply crunch owing to sanctions on Russia that make it more susceptible to recession risks. This has led to a big moment depicting strength in the greenback as markets are expecting the US Fed to raise rates way more swiftly than its peers. Going forward, it remains to be seen whether the single currency can hold around the psychological parity level and regain some lost ground. All eyes would now be on the ECB meeting lined up next week and that will provide further cues about the rupee-dollar exchange rate. Considering the macroeconomic backdrop, the Indian rupee has its eyes set on the 81 to the dollar mark in the near term.” Anindya Banerjee, VP, Currency Derivatives & Interest Rate Derivatives at Kotak Securities “USDINR closed at 79.87 on spot, up 24 paise. Intra day high was 79.91. However, post closing, spot reference in the offshore has bumped above 80.00. Post US CPI, odds of a 100 bps rate hike from has increased significantly. Fed is not just hiking, they are increasing the pace of hikes in every meeting. At the same time, US yield curve has become inverted. An inverted yield curve hints at dramatic growth slowdown and even recession. This cocktail of aggressive Fed and growth slowdown is what can hurt flows towards Emerging markets, like India, and cause USDINR to rise further. We need to keep an eye on the Chinese currency and the Euro. If they fall further, it can drive USDINR towards 80.50 even. Bias remains upward. Range can be between 79.60 and 80.40 on spot.” Gaurang Somaiya, Forex & Bullion Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial Services “Rupee fell for the fourth successive session and fell to fresh all-time lows as the dollar rose sharply against its major crosses after inflation in the US. The greenback rose after data showed U.S. inflation, already at four-decade highs, accelerated even further. Later in the day, odds of a 100 basis points move fell, however, after a couple Fed members supported another 75-basis-point interest rate increase at the central bank’s policy meeting later this month, but would lean toward a larger hike if new data shows demand is not slowing fast enough to reduce inflation.” “Euro hit a 20-year lows after a party in Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s coalition government failed to support a parliamentary confidence vote including measures to offset the cost of living crisis. Today, focus will be on the retail sales and industrial production number from the US. Better-than-expected economic data could extend gains for the dollar. We expect the USDINR(Spot) to trade with a positive bias and quote in the range of 79.40 and 80.20.” (The recommendations in this story are by the respective research analysts and brokerage firms. Sebi disposes proceedings against Dish TV independent directors

[ad_1] The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has disposed of the proceedings initiated by a show cause notice against Dish TV independent directors Bhagwan Das Narang, Rashmi Aggarwal and Shankar Aggarwal without any further directions. In March, the regulator had asked Dish TV India to disclose the results of its shareholder’s meeting held in December 2021 within 24 hours. The company did not disclose the results of its annual general meeting citing a pending case in the Bombay High Court. On March 7, Sebi’s whole-time member S K Mohanty passed an ex-parte interim order against Dish TV, its key management employees and the three IDs. Show cause notices were issued to the IDs seeking an explanation for the delay in disclosing the results despite repeated reminders. While Dish TV subsequently applied for an amicable settlement of the matter under Sebi’s consent mechanism, the IDs decided to defend their position and initiate adjudication proceedings. Sebi’s order on Thursday observed that the regulator’s first advisory was not disclosed by Dish TV to the exchanges. As a result, the advisory was not in the public domain. “The material available on record does not suggest that the noticees were otherwise aware of the first advisory issued by Sebi,” the order said. The final advisory was disclosed by Dish TV to the exchanges subsequently. On February 14, before the commencement of the board meeting, the company informed the IDs that it had already replied to Sebi and was awaiting a final response. “The SCN and facts and circumstances of the case do not show whether the replies of the company dated January 18, 2022 and February 10, 2022, to Sebi and disclosure to the stock exchanges on February 10, 2022, was done after deliberation with independent directors. The facts do not indicate any complicity of the independent directors for the disclosures under Regulation 44(3) of the LODR Regulations and the Advisories issued by Sebi. Thus, no omission to exercise due diligence can be attributed to the independent directors in the facts and circumstances of the case,” the Sebi order observed on Thursday. The March interim order had directed that the demat accounts of the independent directors be frozen until the voting results of the AGM held on December 30, 2021, were disclosed on the stock exchanges. Dish TV had disclosed the results of the AGM to the Exchanges on March 8 and the freezing of the demat accounts was to be lifted as per the said order. [ad_2] Source link

Need to rethink MSP: Time has come to look at alternatives like deficiency payments & direct income support

[ad_1] NITI AAyog Member Ramesh Chand has proposed a deficiency price payments (DPP) system as an alternative to the existing practice of procuring food grain at minimum support prices (MSP) for the public distribution system. The proposal has merit and deserves serious consideration. The problems with MSP, a legacy of the green revolution since the late 1960s, are several. They mainly benefit large surplus-producing farmers in the vanguard agrarian regions of Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh. They introduce a cost-plus determination to prices that is inflationary over the short-term. Such a regime also encourages cultivation of water-intensive crops like paddy in these regions that are facing groundwater-stress, and the need is for crop diversification. Extending them to more crops, besides wheat and rice, also has serious implications for the exchequer if it is backed by open-ended procurement. The government spends Rs 35 for ensuring Rs 100 worth of MSP payments to farmers as physical procurement is expensive. More importantly, they don’t insulate farmers from continuing market failures, volatility of prices and sudden supply gluts, especially when bumper harvests are increasingly becoming the new normal unlike the era of food scarcity in the 1960s. For such reasons, there is a need to rethink MSPs and consider DPPs. The latter compensates farmers for the difference between the MSPs for select crops and their mandi price if it rules at lower levels, and does not entail physical procurement. This is inspired by Madhya Pradesh’s Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana, introduced in October 2017 following violent agrarian protests in the state against falling crop prices. Subsequently, a price deficiency scheme (largely for oil seeds) formed part of the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sankrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA). Haryana is currently in the process of rolling it out for a few commodities. Scaling up a DPP to the national level clearly calls for a closer examination how it worked in MP and on a limited scale for oilseeds. Chand himself cautions that DPP cannot be stopped once implemented. In MP, BBY was given up the very next season as traders had gamed the system, widening the gap between mandi price and MSPs, causing an enormous amount of expenditure by the state government. The big question is how feasible is it to roll out such a scheme nationally by cutting out politically-connected intermediaries and transferring deficiency payments into the bank accounts of the farmers. The method of calculation of compensation and paperwork involved also needs to be simplified to enable more small farmers to register for the scheme. While DPPs definitely can be considered as an alternative to MSPs, there is a warrant to consider other options that are non-distortionary like direct income support, for instance. At a time of agrarian distress, income support schemes—like the transfer of Rs 6,000 into the bank accounts of farmers by the PM-Kisan Samman Yojana—benefit farmers without distorting markets through DPP or MSPs. They have been found to be more inclusive and promote more equity across farm sizes, according to research. There is also a critical mass of quasi-rural basic income schemes like Telengana’s Rythu Bandhu scheme or Odisha’s Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation, among others, that can serve as a basis or scaling up direct income support for farmers. Reckoning with the Cloudstar attack, one year later

[ad_1] Computer code on a screen with a skull representing a computer virus / malware attack. Nearly a year has passed since the Cloudstar ransomware attack and Stephen Millstein says he still feels “something like PTSD” whenever he thinks about what went down that dreadful mid-July weekend. Millstein’s title firm, Certified Title Corporation, founded in 1994, was one of the hundreds of firms impacted by the cyber attack on the cloud storage provider. “They essentially housed our entire business,” Millstein said. “I have compared it to waking up one morning and discovering that you have no credit cards, no passport, no ID, no cell phone — nothing. And then how do you go about reestablishing yourself when you have nothing to build from?” At the time of the attack, Millstein and Certified Title Corporation had been with Cloudstar for 10 years. The digital storage provider housed all of Certified Title’s data and hosted the firm’s subscription to ResWare, its closing software of choice. “It was like Certified Title never existed,” he said. At the time of the attack, Cloudstar operated six data centers in the U.S. and served more than 42,000 users, according to the American Land Title Association. The attack left hundreds of title companies and lenders unable to conduct transactions or close loans. For Milstein and many others in the title industry, the attack served as a wakeup call that even their encrypted cloud storage providers were not safe from security threats. “We got a phone call Friday morning around 10 telling us that they were having a problem related to ransomware, but they didn’t offer any real information,” Millstein said. “Ransomware was a new word to me in the context of it actually affecting me — I had heard it on the news, but this was the first time it meant something to my life. Initially, I didn’t think too much of it and figured that by Monday things would be right as rain.” Over the course of the weekend, Millstein realized he was wrong. “We did ultimately get our data back from Cloudstar, but it took months for that to happen,” he said. Title shrugged Bruce Phillips, the senior vice president and chief information security officer at west, a WFG company, was about to get on his tractor Saturday morning when he received a phone call from WFG’s general counsel. Some of the independent title insurers the firm contracts out to were having an issue. “Once we realized what was going on, it was really eye opening because it wasn’t the companies themselves that were compromised, it was an underlying service provider,” Phillips said. Adding to the stress of the situation is what Phillips and Millstein both describe as a total lack of communication from Cloudstar. “I was lucky and got a call from Cloudstar Saturday afternoon and the guy who called me just told me that it was really bad and said that I would still have a problem come Monday,” Millstein said. “But from the other title firms I have spoken with it doesn’t sound like anyone else got a phone call.” Millstein never heard directly from Cloudstar again after that Saturday afternoon call, and as far as Phillips knows, none of the independent firms he works with received any notice or updates of what was going on. “There was zero information,” Phillips said. “I was reaching out to all of my contacts trying to find out as much as I could because the Cloudstar customers were getting zero information and the ones I have talked to since have still not gotten good clarity on what happened. I think the lack of communication to the affected parties was the worst part of it for many.” As a result, Cloudstar customers were forced to rely on press statements published on the cloud service provider’s website. The final update came in October, when Cloudstar announced that the third-party forensics experts it had brought in to conduct the investigation and assist in data recovery efforts, Tetra Defense, had finished its investigation, allowing the service provider to onboard new clients and welcome back those who had temporarily left. If one were to visit Cloudstar’s website today however, they would see an Ayn Rand quote that reads: “I started my life with a single absolute: that the world was mine to shape in the image of my highest values and never to be given up to a lesser standard.” Cloudstar then wrote: “The dawn of a new Cloudstar is upon us. Check back soon as we architect a robust future where technology safely enables the exchange of commerce. To our loyal customers, we thank you for your continued support and look forward to servicing your information technology needs.” Preparedness The lack of clarity on Cloudstar’s website feels frighteningly on brand for a firm that suffered an attack, where a year has passed, and no one knows who carried out the attack and how they bypassed Cloudstar’s security systems. “I do security for a national underwriter,” Phillips said. “I feel like I need to understand what happened. It is not about finger pointing, it is about finding out how it happened so we can build better defenses for future attacks. I mean within weeks information was out about the SolarWinds attack and this has been a year and we have nothing.” Even before the Cloudstar attack, security and preparedness were top of mind for Phillips. “The advice we have been giving everybody is to think about business resilience and what the worst case scenario might look like and how you can recover from that,” he said. Reggie Davis, the general counsel at closing software provider Qualia, said that backups are key. “I’m a big believer that you don’t want to have a lot of heroic efforts when it comes to security,” Davis said. “You want to have good people, processes and policies behind the scenes. We also encourage people to do business continuity disaster recovery planning and training, so
