FCC approves Amazon’s Kuiper Project

[ad_1] Amazon has received authorization from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to proceed with Project Kuiper, its initiative to launch a fleet of low-orbiting satellites that would be used to provide broadband internet access to underserved communities in the U.S. The FCC approved of the tech giant’s ambitious project by a vote of 5-0 on Thursday. With the commission’s green light, Amazon will now be able to begin the deployment of its 3,236 satellites. In total, Amazon is spending $10 billion on the project based in a new Amazon development facility in Redmond, Wash. “We have heard so many stories lately about people who are unable to do their job or complete schoolwork because they don’t have reliable internet at home,” Dave Limp, Amazon’s senior vice president, said in a statement. “There are still too many places where broadband access is unreliable or where it doesn’t exist at all. Kuiper will change that.”  Many school districts in the country that are located in areas without widespread internet access have struggled to reach their students during the coronavirus pandemic. Forced online, many states and cities have created mobile hotspots where children can turn in and download their assignments. [ad_2]

Tropical Storm Isaias drenches Puerto Rico, expected to strengthen to hurricane with East Coast in sight

[ad_1] Tropical Storm Isaias knocked out electricity and caused flooding and landslides in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic Thursday, following forecasts that predicted the storm would morph into a hurricane, as it moves toward the Bahamas and the East Coast of the United States. The storm’s maximum sustained winds of 60 mph sent rivers of water flowing down the streets in Puerto Rico, The Associated Press reported. Trees and telephone lines were also reportedly toppled and the National Guard had to rescue at least 35 people, including two newborn babies. “Everyone is in a constant state of emergency,” Marieli Grant of Mercy Corps told The AP. TROPICAL STORM ISAIAS: AMERICANS SHOULD START PREPARING FOR ‘WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL AND STORM SURGE,’ HURRICANE CENTER SAYS Isaias was centered about 250 miles southeast of the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday afternoon, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Forecasters believe it could be near the central Bahamas by Friday and could potentially move near South Florida by Saturday. The U.S. should prepare for “impacts from winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge” as Isaias heads along its forecasted path toward the East Coast, the Center warned on Thursday. Nevada firefighting planes collide midair; both pilots dead, authorities say

[ad_1] Two single-engine planes collided in midair Thursday afternoon during firefighting activities in southeastern Nevada, according to reports. Both pilots were killed in the crash and a recovery effort was underway, FOX 5 of Las Vegas reported. “We offer our sincere condolences to the families of the two pilots and to all those working with the BLM Nevada Ely District,” BLM Nevada State Director Jon Raby told the station. “BLM” refers to the state Bureau of Land Management. A  Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokeswoman told Fox News the accident occurred while the planes were fighting the Bishop Fire near Caliente, Nev., around 1 p.m. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation, and the NTSB will determine the probable cause of the crash. Michael Brown: Missouri police officer who killed the 18-year-old faces no charges

[ad_1] The investigation didn’t exonerate Wilson, Bell said. Wilson’s shooting of Brown, a Black man, in August 2014 sparked a federal civil rights inquiry, protests, and a national debate. Protests erupted around the country after a grand jury declined to indict Wilson. “Although this case represents one of the most significant moments in St. Louis’ history, the question for this office was a simple one,” Bell said. “Could we prove beyond a reasonable doubt that when Darren Wilson shot Michael Brown, he committed murder or manslaughter under Missouri law?” “After an independent and in-depth review of the evidence, we cannot prove that he did,” Bell said. Wilson shot Brown, who was not armed, after a struggle ensued when Wilson stopped Brown on a Ferguson street. Witnesses at the time said the officer fired his gun while Brown’s hands were in the air. Wilson has said Brown attacked him, and he feared for his life. “I also want to be clear that our investigation does not exonerate Darren Wilson,” Bell said, pointing out the difference between proving a case during trial and “clearing him of any and all wrongdoing.” “There are so many points in which Darren Wilson could have handled the situation differently, and if he had, Michael Brown might still be alive,” Bell said. “But that is not the question before us. The only question is whether we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a crime occurred,” Bell said. “The answer to that question is ‘no.’ And I would violate my ethical duties if I nonetheless brought charges.” CNN has reached out to Brown’s family for comment. The family brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and reached a settlement in 2017. CNN’s Theresa Waldrop contributed to this report. [ad_2]
